Chemical Safety

Designed for all employees whose work brings them into contact with chemicals and who require a basic knowledge of chemical hazards and the relevant legislation.

The course aims to ensure employees are familiar with the nature and properties of chemicals and the safe working practices to be adopted when storing and handling chemicals. Basic first aid is also covered.

Chemical Safety

Course Modules:

  • Why Chemical Safety? – (5 mins)
    Explains why chemicals can be hazardous, and introduces the COSHH Regulations.
  • Chemical Hazards – (20 mins)
    Describes the different types of chemical hazard, illustrates the different symbols used to represent them, and introduces the CLP Regulation and the GHS.
  • Chemicals in the Atmosphere – (5 mins)
    Considers the inhalation risks of chemical substances and introduces the Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL).
  • Safe Working and Handling – (15 mins)
    Considers the methods used to reduce risks when using hazardous substances and gives guidance on the safe storage of hazardous chemicals.
  • Basic First Aid – (10 mins)
    Provides simple advice to anyone with no medical knowledge, giving them confidence to do something positive before expert help arrives. Covers chemical burns to skin and eyes, poisoning, and exposure to toxic fumes.
  • Self Test – (5 mins)
    Twenty multiple choice questions to test the student’s understanding of the course. Results are stored for later retrieval by training supervisors.
